« Times New Roman »

It is one of the first Unicode fonts that allow to type Vietnamese with accents (the rest are Arial, Verdana and Tahoma - I guess).

Times New Roman is a serif typeface designed by Stanley Morison and Victor Lardent in 1932 for the British newspaper, “The Times”. The font is influential in the designing of some serif fonts later (e.g Georgia) because of its ubiquity. Here is a comment made by Will Hill in his book “The Complete Typographer” (2nd edition): “A modernized form of Pierpoint’s Plantin, Times New Roman is a durable and economic text face. Such character as it retained is largely eroded by its familiarity.”

According to the Vox system (See more at Wikipedia), Times New Roman is put to the third category, “Transitional”. As other fonts in the same category such as New Baskerville or Century Schoolbook, Times New Roman shares many characteristic features: high contrast, pointed apex (e.g letter “A”), vertical serifs (e.g letter “C”), drop ears (letter “g” and “r”), etc.

These photos were taken at my high school :”>

The first picture make me feel ‘restful’ because of its horizontal lines - lots of horizontal lines formed by the balconies, steel handrails, etc. and the pose of people in it.

About the second picture with the name ‘Restless’… Well, after taking the first picture I was wandering around the school to find some image contain that feeling. And I found out an old wall (at the back), which hasn’t been washed or repainted for a long time. I choose this picture possibly because of the texture on the wall.

P/s: That’s weird… I remember that I’ve changed the “restless” image to the appropriate position - should be ‘portrait’, not ‘landscape’ as shown.

Design Principles (continue)

Here it is, the poster review!
The...

Ok… A little bit late. Here it is, the poster review!

The poster for Moulin Rouge made by Henry de Toulouse-Lautrec in 1891.

There was a movie made recently named “Moulin Rouge” (I’m not sure about its genre - documentary maybe?). The movie is about the nightclub Moulin Rouge, about lives of many people in that period of time, and also about the area of Montmartre and bohemianism.

To be easy to understand, I’ll talk some about the meaning of the text in the poster.”Moulin Rouge” at the upper-left corner is the name of the nightclub advertised. It was a well-known nightclub in Montmartre (Paris). “Concert - Bal - Tous les soirs” at the upper-right corner means “Concert - Dance - Every night”. At the upper-center, “La Goulue” (The Glutton - in English) is the nickname of one of the most dancers of nightclub Moulin Rouge, Louise Weber. The female dancer in the poster is her. The dancing partner of her in the Moulin Rouge is Jacques Renaudin - as known as Valentin le Desosse or Valentin the Boneless, can also be seen in the poster. He is the man brown-painted at the lower right. The designer, Henry de Toulouse-Lautrec signed his name at the lower-left corner - “T-Lautrec” (can you see it? *wink*). The text at the very lower-right is an address, I guess that’s the address of the company which publish this poster.

Background information, briefly complete *yay* (Read more at http://www.lautrec.info)

Link to the knowledge learned in W1, here are some comments of mine about the basic elements of the poster:

Lines and shapes: the poster was influenced by Art Nouveau graphic style. At the result, lines (brush painting) were very soft (easy to realize this, for example the lines of the character Valentin le Desosse). The shapes are the same, very natural. The way Henry designed the poster was not complicated. It was simple, but very beautiful.

Next, about colours used. The poster was designed with warm colours only - red, orange, yellow, brown, etc., combined with black and white. Because of that, the atmosphere transferred by the poster about the nightclub Moulin Rouge was very warm and exciting.

Typefaces used were painted manually by Henry de Toulouse-Lautrec. They were suitable to the style of the poster - soft, rounded, not seem to be mechanical.

The structure of the poster is quite balanced - with 2 focused character at 2 sides of the canvas, La Goulue and Valentin le Desosse.

Another important thing is that Henry de Toulouse-Lautrec was influenced by the Japanese style (asymmetric composition, flat areas of colour) - and that adaption the fad for Japanese style is shown clearly in the poster.

“Lautrec captured the spirit and emotion of the era in his posters…”

(Chris Whitten)

Kinetic Typography

If you have time, watching “Flickermood” of Sebastian Lange is not a bad idea :D It’s one of the first Kinetic Typography that I saw - and it really touched me *blush again*.
